Elate Cosmetics Review

Elate Cosmetics is a Canadian-made makeup brand that is clean, vegan, cruelty-free and prioritizes sustainable packaging. I discovered them while searching for Canadian made products as well as makeup that was made with ingredients I could trust on my sensitive and very finicky skin.

A lot of their product packaging is made from bamboo which they chose because it’s a great sustainable material for the environment. Bamboo is self-regenerating and grows quite quickly. It is also used for eco purposes like helping soil and preventing erosion. What I also love is that their products are refillable. Once you have the compact or palette, you can purchase product refills, so you're only repurchasing items that you actually used up.

When you purchase any of their pressed powders (ie. eyeshadow or foundation), they come in paper envelopes that contain seeds! This seed paper makes for a fun little DIY and I was able to get mine to sprout within a week.

This powder foundation performs beautifully and really does offer nice coverage. Unfortunately, I chose a shade that is just slightly too light for my skin tone (which is a risk when buying makeup online), but I was able to get some use out of it in the wintertime when I’m my palest. It can come across as a tiny bit chalky and powdery so it’s best to use it sparingly with a big fluffy face brush. Overall, I would not repurchase but mainly because I have another powder foundation that I’m loving right now (the Nude by Nature one!). I’m definitely going to re-use the compact though (maybe for a bronzer or highlighter - whenever I need a new one).

Elate Cosmetics have a few palettes and options but I chose this one since the entire base was magnetic (meaning I can move and tetrus different eyeshadows of different sizes inside). It’s a great size for me (it feels like a small-medium palette). I really love how sturdy it feels because of the bamboo. There's a magnetic closure and the clear window is plexiglass (not real glass) which means there’s no risk of breaking. I’ve had this piece for 6 months and love it!

I figured some people might want a sneak peak of what I have in my palette, so I labelled the colours!

Pressed Eyeshadow

Colour: On their website, Elate describes Modish as a plummy raspberry with subtle shimmer and I would definitely agree.

Modish is a beautiful purple shade with a little bit of shimmer. This colour is a really versatile one: it looks great all over the lid (like a smoky eye), just in the crease with a lighter colour on the lid and can even work to deepen the outer corner of your lid if the rest of your eye look is fairly light coloured. I have a pretty big dip in this colour considering I’ve only had it for 6 months. This isn’t the most firmly packed shadow, so there will by a kickback from your brush but it’s nothing crazy. It also blends beautifully, I either use a fluffy crease brush or a dense dome brush.

The nice thing about Elate cream products is that you can order a tiny sample for $4 and test the shade. Which is awesome if you want a perfect shade match.

This concealer is super creamy and looks great under the eye and on blemishes (especially with my ultra dry skin at the moment.) It’s a little bit light for my skin but Elate doesn’t have the best shade range and I figured too light is better than too dark or too yellow. This is definitely a concealer you need to set with powder since it is so creamy. Overall, I’ve had it in my collection for over a year and it’s been performing great and hasn’t dried up yet!

Mascara

A nice thing about this black mascara is that it’s fairly waterproof and safe for sensitive eyes. It’s made of clean, vegan and cruelty free ingredients. I used to do 2 coats of this mascara on my top lashes and it gives a daily natural look. It’s more lengthening and separating than volumizing. It should be noted that I used the entire product up! (Hence no photo of it).

I hope this review was able to give you a bit of insight into Elate Cosmetics products and let me know if you give some of them a try! Overall, I'm pretty pleased with the brand and performance of the products. I definitely think I would repurchase some of the pressed eyeshadows and I would look into trying their brow pomade eventually (although right now, I have lot's of brow products to work through).
