Bonlook Glasses Review

I've been wearing my glasses for about 3-4 years now and just recently had my eyes re-checked by the optometrist. I wanted to get that out of the way sooner rather than later since I'll be graduating soon and my school insurance covers eye exams and glasses! My prescription ended up barely changing, but I figured it would be good to have a back-up pair of glasses because if anything were to happen to my current ones... well I only have one pair so I'd be out of luck. That being said, I didn't want to spend too too much out of pocket so I wanted an inexpensive pair that would be mostly covered by insurance... insert Bonlook!

Bonlook is a Canadian glasses company based in Montreal. They design all their own frames so it keeps the cost down and even if you purchase in-store, it gets manufactured in their warehouse and then mailed to you when it's ready (at least that's how I understand it to be). They have a few in-person stores but my area is currently in lockdown so I ordered mine online. I know! Ordering glasses online... scary!

The pair I got were called the Romy in the colour Aurore and they are regularly priced at $179 (including prescription lenses). Now, their glasses do go on sale for Black Friday or Boxing day... so you can get an even better deal depending on when you want to purchase. The prices they advertise include the "basic lenses" which would be in the lowest prescription bracket, reading glasses, or non-prescription (like Blue-light) glasses - so if you've got a more complicated or specific prescription (within the multifocal category)- the price does go up and you may have to book an in-person appointment. Since the prices are so low, everything extra is also an add-on: like thinner lenses, would be an additional charge of $60. So, while the price looks too good to be true - depending on your prescription it could be a little deceiving. All their glasses come with a 30 day return window and a 1 year warranty. All their lenses are scratch-resistant and have an anti-reflective coating as well.

I chose the Romy style because I like glasses that have the little nose-pads. They stay on my face so much better. I know that's a very specific stylistic preference, but I've tried glasses without the little pads and they just don't work for my face shape or lifestyle.

Once I placed my order, I went into my online Bonlook account and added in extra information: a PDF of my prescription and a picture of myself for the Bonlook team to measure my pupillary distance (or PD for short). Both bits of information had very clear instructions on the Bonlook site and when you click on the "My Orders" tab, it'll tell you what information they need and how to submit it. It honestly took less than 30 minutes and was super easy to follow! This is also where you can get a PDF invoice, which can be submitted to an insurance provider.

A couple of days later, I got an email saying that the eye experts over at Bonlook approved my additional documentation (PD + prescription) and that my glasses were getting made! A little bit later, I got my shipping confirmation email. Unfortunately the "track my package" link they provided was just a link to Canada Post and there was no tracking number in that email or on my online Bonlook account. I could've emailed their customer service team to ask about it, but honestly, I figured I can just wait it out and if I didn't receive my package, then I'd contact them. Maybe that was me being too chill about it, but whatever!

Fast forward a couple of weeks and I got the package in the mail. It came in a small box (not excessive packaging). Inside was the leopard print box, which is nice and sturdy and I'll be keeping it to re-purpose. Inside this box was the glasses case, which is a compact hard-shell case with a magnetic closure. I really really enjoy this case because all my previous glasses have come with clunky cases that aren't really "travel friendly." When I say travel friendly, I even mean just keeping it in my purse or backpack because I only wear my glasses about 50% of the time. So the case is right up my alley! I also like that it's all black and sleek and comes with a basic cleaning cloth.

Finally, the glasses themselves. They feel like very good quality frames, comparable to what I see in more traditional glasses retailers that are charging $300+ for the frame (not even including lenses). I've been wearing this pair since the beginning of January, so I can't speak to how well they'll do long-term. Compared to my previous glasses (which are Ray Ban), which I've been wearing for the last 3-4 years, the quality of the materials and weight of the Bonlook pair feels the same. The only real difference is the shape of the glasses, so I'm getting used to wearing my new ones. These Romy ones are a little bit bigger than my previous pair of glasses (bear in mind that I have a smaller face) and the frames are lighter (in colour) and thinner - so they definitely look different on my face.

Overall, I'm really impressed with Bonlook. The glasses are such a great price, especially considering the quality of the materials, the style is current and the whole online shopping experience was excellent. The best news? It worked seamlessly with my insurance too (I will note, however, that Bonlook doesn't bill directly to insurances, it is something I had to do after the fact).

So would I recommend Bonlook?! Definitely! And I'll definitely be purchasing another pair (probably prescription sunglasses) in the future. Because my prescription isn't too complex, it really was a great deal for me to go with Bonlook. I know in the future, my mom is thinking of trying it out and she has a much more complex prescription, so maybe at that point I can add in that perspective into this review. Overall, I would highly recommend Bonlook to a friend or family member (and I already have)! Glasses don't have to be $500... who knew!?
