This year I've been on a mission to purchase Canadian-made items in every aspect of my life. While I'm not achieving this 100%, I have been doing lot's of research and have found so many cool brands that I'd love to share with you. I would love to hear of any brands you know of so please leave a comment down below!
Brave Leather
Price: $$$
Brave Leather does use real leather and the items are priced at that level however, when they do have sales they’re really good! Their bags do tend to be on the trendier side with patterns and colours, so it’s not my favourite aesthetically, but it the items look like very high quality!
Hides Handcrafted
Price:$$
Handmade Canadian leather bags at decent prices?! Don’t mind if I do. Hides Handcrafted on Etsy has so many different options and they’re made in Ontario. They have a variety of styles so you can pick whatever suit your fancy! The type of leather they use does seem to show wear and tear (natural markings) which is nice but also might not be great if you want to use it as a more “professional” work bag. These bags are also very customizable: you can choose what straps you want or if you need zipper closures but these add-ons do incur extra costs!
Bloom Cotton Co
Price:$ - $$
This Toronto-based company makes the cutest patterned zippered bags (think cosmetic bags, etc.). I love the floral designs but if you're less into girly florals they have waxed canvas neutral coloured bags too. They carry a couple of cross-body styles handbags as well as some totes too!
Hannah Canvas Design
Price:$
Adorable and quirky backpacks and totes. These have a similar feel to Fjallraven backpacks that are ever-so-popular. I really like that Hannah Canvas uses bright cheery colours and the price-point is very reasonable considering other similar bags run way more expensive! My personal favourite is this backpack in tomato red!
Watershed Wax Co
Price:$ - $$
Made in British Columbia. This shop sells waxed canvas handbags in tote and cross body styles. I’m personally a fan of the fold-over purse because I think it looks more casual which matches the vibe of the fabric! However, I feel like that style wouldn’t be useful in my life just because I prefer easy zipper access into my purses.
Ela
Price: $ - $$
Ela handbags are vegan and are centred around classic and timeless styles. I really enjoy that a lot of the bags have gold hardware. There are a wide variety of styles including clutches, small cross body purses and totes. On their about page, it details that Ela collaborated with local business college students to think through sustainability which is awesome! The website doesn't detail where these bags are manufactured but the business itself is Canadian.
Fluf
Price:$
Fluf isn't as "up-front" about being based in Canada but with some searching, I found that they are based in Toronto, Ontario, however, their manufacturing is done in China. They do address questions like this on their FAQ page: here. I really like that their backpacks and lunch bags are really designed for kids (but they do have some age-less styles too!).
I hope this round-up helped you discover some new Canadian-made handbag gems!
